Asepsis and antiseptics are an integral part of surgery and are directly related to operations, joint replacements, and the treatment of diseases. The basis of organizing work in surgical departments begins with compliance with the rules of asepsis and antiseptics.
The main stages in the development of surgery were the discovery of aseptic and antiseptic methods. Because before the advent of aseptic and antiseptics, most patients died not from the original disease, but from its complications. The great scientist MI Pirogov wrote during the Crimean War: "It can be noted that the majority of wounded people die not from the wound itself, but from hospital infection." The Hungarian physician IF Semmelweis in 1847 noted that the cause of postpartum sepsis was the introduction of "corpse poison" by the doctor during manual examination of the uterus of a woman in labor.
